Kagoshima Treasures:

Earth Friendly Bags

from kagoshima ‘black pig’ ft. yasuhiro miyanohara

One of Kagoshima’s major exports is Kurobuta, a world renowned heritage pork boasting a high fat content, deep flavor and exceptional tenderness. In a mission to reduce waste while honoring the animal, homegrown artist Yasuhiro Miyanohara applies a special dye to the pigskin to transform it into colourful, soft and pliable high quality leather. Best known for his original works involving glass, denim and leather, Yasuhiro has created a new line of bags, totes and other goods with the focus on aesthetics and functionality.

What would have been scrap leather is reworked into whimsical, thought provoking designs. All pieces are made by hand and are one of a kind. Since he chooses not to use metal fittings or other distracting elements, he ensures that attention remains purely on the Kurobuta leather itself. The lightweight nature of the bags make them practical for everyday use—and as time goes by, you will even see the leather deepen in character.
